Dummy: And just like that, 2022 is nearly over. It has been a whirlwind year for E2G Exchange, and time has flown by. Amidst the excitement, it’s important to pause, reflect, and appreciate the incredible impact and progress achieved by our global E2G Exchange community.
Despite the challenging economic landscape, the renewable energy sector has thrived. This year, the world celebrated a monumental achievement of installing 1 terawatt of solar power. Looking ahead, the International Energy Agency predicts that renewables will surpass coal as the largest source of global electricity generation within three years, with solar leading the way by 2027.
Every member of the E2G Exchange community can take pride in being part of the global energy transformation that our planet and societies urgently need. Together, we have funded numerous solar projects, bringing affordable, clean, and reliable electricity to diverse organizations in South Africa. To date, these projects have generated over 15 gigawatt-hours of clean energy, preventing nearly 16,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to eliminating more than 8,000 tonnes of coal burning.
In 2022, we achieved a significant milestone by welcoming businesses to join our community as solar project funders. This expansion has allowed us to innovate, grow our capacity, and create even more clean energy. By analyzing the numbers, we discovered the massive potential for transformation. If the top 10 South African companies invest just 1% of their profits into solar power and battery backup for schools, every school in the country could be solar-powered and protected from power outages by 2025. This would relieve pressure on the grid, eliminate disruptions to education, and inspire future leaders.
Our corporate offering gained momentum this year, with leading companies like Cars.co.za investing in our Karoo Fresh solar-plus-storage project to enhance sustainability and diversify their revenue streams. We also launched Brighter Business, an initiative aimed at inspiring businesses to adopt solar power and take action against the energy and climate crises. Additionally, we welcomed Martin Webb, an energy industry veteran, as our CEO, bringing valuable leadership experience and expertise.
